Participation and Varsity Requirements

Participation Checklist

To participate this Spring, you must complete the following:

Students cannot practice or participate without a signed MHSAA physical form. Students cannot compete without completing Pay to Play & Athletic Registration requirements. You are also required to read through the Dexter Student-Athlete/Parent Handbook. Dexter athletic forms can also be found at the Athletic Department Website.

Additional Information

  • Scholarship: Athletes must be in good academic standing to participate. Learn good time management skills. Work on projects in advance. Plan studies with the track schedule in mind.  Consider the practicality of other extracurricular commitments during season.

  • Scheduling: Consistent attendance is essential. Absences, leaving early, and tardiness interfere with the flow of team practices.  Do not schedule ANYTHING during practices or competitions.  Athletes must stay until practices and meets are over.

  • Transportation home from away meets: To take your athlete home after a meet, you must contact a coach at the meet to check out. We keep a record of all athletes who leave with a parent/guardian.

Uniform:

  • Clothing: Uniforms (singlet and shorts) are your responsibility! Take good care of them.  Wash inside-out and hang-dry.  Wear weather appropriate clothing.  Keep a sweatshirt and sweatpants in your locker.

  • Equipment: Athletes need good, well-fitting, event-appropriate shoes and spikes to boost performance and prevent injury.

Personal Care:

  • Nutrition and hydration: Make healthy nutritional choices. Nutritious diets aid performance and help prevent injury.  Pack snacks to eat before practice.  This is especially important for those with first lunch.  Hydration is very important.  You need a water bottle during practices and meets. Water is not always turned on at the field.  Hydrating during the school day is also important.

  • Sleep: A good night’s sleep is critical for academic and athletic performance. Make good time management choices to get appropriate sleep time.

Varsity Letter Requirements

The coaching staff reserves the right to make final decisions regarding Varsity Letters. The following are Varsity Letter requirements:

  1. You must meet our Team Policy Expectations.

  2. You must complete the season in good standing.

  3. You must earn either a total of 10 points from competitions, or meet one or more of the varsity standards for an event (see list of times and distances for each event below).

Below is a list of ways to earn points:

Score competition points during the season. In Dual Meets: 1st place=5 points, 2nd place=3 points, 3rd place=1 point. Varsity Invitational Meet points (5 + teams) are doubled, or are awarded based on the particular invitational meet scoring.

*Please Note: certain JV invitationals, or "Last Chance" meets may not qualify for full or partial points. Please talk with coaches prior to competing if meet will qualify for varsity points.

  • When in your third track season, demonstrating outstanding respect and commitment while improving upon your previous season’s performance can result in a letter at Coach’s discretion

  • Coach’s points can also be achieved at Coach’s discretion based on effort, progression, and respect for coaches, teammates, parents, and opponents.
