Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 10
5/12/24

The SEC Championship Meet was quite the event with less than ideal weather conditions but that didn't stop our amazing student-athletes from performing! In fact, the meet didn't officially end until Saturday afternoon with the conclusion of the boys pole vault! We crowned four SEC Champions:

Raiden Kipfmiller in Pole Vault

Clark Sheldon in Pole Vault

Brandon Anderson in both the 3200m and 800m (also setting a new school record in the 800m)

We compete in a stacked conference, arguably the most talented in the state, so team finishes of 5th for the girls and 3rd for the guys is tremendously exciting! Congrats to all who competed and congrats on your strong performances as we kick off the Championship Season!

Regionals week has arrived! We have two meets on the schedule for this week with opportunities to drop more time or make additional gains! Here are your updates for the week:

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 7

4/21/24

WOW!!! What a week! Thank you so much to our athletes for giving your all be it on the track, in the field, or working your volunteer shift to help us have successful meets. It was awesome to see you step up as athlete hosts, welcoming our visitors and striking a balance between competition and sportsmanship. Victories and defeat are always made better when you have the chance to lift others regardless of what school they represent. Thank you to our family volunteers who helped make these meets a success as well - we couldn't do it without you. You all, student-athletes and families, are the reason others love coming to Dexter for T&F meets as you help make it the best it can be. THANK YOU! We have another opportunity to shine on Tuesday - let's make it happen! Here are your updates for the week:

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 6
4/14/24

Our meet at Pioneer was a great open to the SEC schedule. While we didn't bring home a win for either the girls or boys teams, we did see some awesome successes and the future is looking bright. Here are your updates for the week (including TWO meets!):

  • We host three meets in a seven day stretch and need to be sure we have volunteers in place to make them successful. The remaining spots are in the Field Event areas so if your student-athlete participates in these then this is ideal as there is no better way to get up close to the action! No experience is necessary, we will help you get prepared and comfortable. Here are the Sign-Ups for volunteer opportunities (Thank you in advance for considering!):

  • Tuesday, 4/16: SEC League Meet at Dexter vs Skyline & Bedford:

    • Unified Track & Field as well as cheer will be running and throwing starting at 3:30p. This is a great opportunity for our Unified Athletes to perform after the preparation they have put in.

    • Field Events start at 4:30p

    • Running events start at 5p

    • Rosters are available at the links below. These are not final but will continue to be updated through Monday evening after practice:

    • Tentative roster listed by athlete

    • Tentative roster listed by event

  • Friday Practice will still be at 3:30p even though it is a half-day. We have a lot going on that day outside of practice that includes setup for April Showers and development sessions with an outside speaker (limited spots available).

  • April Showers is a limited entry event but we need all hands on deck as we are hosting this meet that doubles as a fundraiser for the program. We will have a roster spreadsheet and worker spreadsheet out mid-week.

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 5

4/7/24

What a great meet at Allen Park! It was impressive to see everyone working together to prepare for relays that we will not see again this year and doing things that are outside the comfort zone. This experience will make us stronger as individuals and as a team! It's a shorter email this week but packed with information so here you go:

  • We host three meets in a seven day stretch and need to be sure we have volunteers in place to make them successful. The remaining spots are in the Field Event areas so if your student-athlete participates in these then this is ideal as there is no better way to get up close to the action! No experience is necessary, we will help you get prepared and comfortable. Here are the Sign-Ups for volunteer opportunities (Thank you in advance for considering!):

  • Tuesday, 4/9: We have one meet this week, our first SEC League Meet - a dual at Pioneer. Preliminary details are here but more will be shared on Monday:

  • Distance & Mid-Distance training plan:

    • Tuesday, 4/9: Meet Day!

    • Wednesday, 4/10: 4-8 Recovery MIles + Shins & Plyos

    • Thursday, 4/11: 5-8 Foundation Miles + Shins/Core/Hips

    • Friday, 4/12: Workout day, 2 mile tempo @ 1600m pace + 1 min; 4 x 600 on the track @ 1600m pace, 3 min rest, 5-8 miles on the day

  • Practice is Moving! We will now begin and end our practices at Al Ritt (distance may have alternate locations) but keep the 3:30 - 5:30p time. Athletes that drive - please do not arrive at the parking lot before 3:15p allowing time for Creekside traffic to clear out!

  • Allen Park Relays are this Saturday!! We will have transportation for this meet which is awesome! The bus will leave from Creekside (YES, BY THE TRACK AT CREEKSIDE) departing at 7am. We will have a roster coming mid-week so be sure to check your emails for it!

  • Volunteer Sign-ups are coming mid-week as well! We cannot have successful meets without your help in a number of areas! It's going to be a big mid-week update!

  • Team Pictures were a huge success! Here is a note from our team photographer, Melanie Reyes:

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 2
3/17/24

What a great and energetic first week! We have 140 student-athletes that have already made the commitment to this team with more to join as they come off their winter activities. WOW! We are going to have an awesome season of personal growth and team competition! In fact, we already have our first meet of the season this week - details can be found below. Here are your weekly updates and schedule:

  • Messages we want to reiterate from the week:

  • **Attendance at practice is extremely important as this is a team sport with points contributing to championship efforts. You will be pushed to improve and know that your experience will help you be a better athlete, student, and overall person with grit and tenacity. Your team is counting on you, whether it's in a relay or for team scoring.

  • **Track is a great sport to pair with your other athletic endeavors. While we are not a conditioning program for other sports, being 100% committed will help with your other areas of interest!

  • **We have less than 10 weeks remaining in the season (11 weeks for those that qualify for the State Meet). 9% of the season is already over! It's going to fly so buckle up!

  • Practices this week will continue to start and end at DHS, meeting in the Commons. Practice will run from 3:30p to 5:30p each weekday.

  • Be prepared to stay inside (shorts and t-shirts) or go outside if the weather permits (may want warmer clothes). Bring everything you might need every day.

  • Big Teams (Click here to log in) - This is the new registration system for athletics that started this past winter. Please take a look and be sure you register for T&F. Here is a Step-by-step guide to registering with Big Teams. You will be invoiced for the spring season at a later date, right now it's most important to get signed up

  • Singlet Orders - Be sure you have a Dexter T&F Singlet or get it ordered. We'll be handing these out Monday with sizes fulfilled in the order in which they were placed.

  • Another key part of the T&F uniform is All Black Shorts. These are not provided but are necessary to meet MHSAA rules. There is no particular style needed, just being black in color. Ask a coach if you have questions.

  • Our Team Captains are participating in a fundraiser as a gift to the team. Their efforts are going to allow us to purchase "Dread Nation" shirts for every member of the team so we can present a unified front with not only our singlets but our warm up wear. We're really excited to be able to make this offer and thank you to our Captains for doing this for the team! Sign up for your shirt size here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fOpq2N0IhRBhztbmfF6Uvl0uT9Lnex0X7iRzfjW7fE0/edit?usp=sharing

  • Physical - If this is your first sport of the school year, be sure you have a completed doctor's physical from after April 15, 2023. Physicals are self-uploaded to Big Teams in the step above. Click here for the form from MHSAA.

  • Shoes - check out the attached deals from our local partners and be sure you have proper footwear (this is key to injury prevention). We have wonderful local partners that are experienced in helping our athletes to find the right shoes. We should have representation from our local partners at the March 11th Q&A if you have footwear related questions.

  • March 20th - Team pictures are scheduled for Wednesday, March 20th - Here is a note from our team photographer, Melanie Reyes:

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 1

3/10/24

HERE WE GO! We are so excited to be kicking off the official start of the 2024 Track & Field Season! We've seen so many of you putting in the offseason work to get stronger, faster, healthier, and fit...it's going to pay off in a big way! We already had athletes setting PRs in the indoor circuit which bodes well for outdoors. For those of you not able to make it to winter conditioning due to conflicts, not to worry as we focus our efforts on incremental gains leading to mid-May when we aim for us to be at our best and have everything clicking. We have the time but get ready to work! Here are your weekly updates and schedule:

  • We will start these first two weeks of practice at DHS, meeting in the Commons. Practice will run from 3:30p to 5:30p each weekday. We start practice with a team meeting (we try to be brief but Monday may be a bit longer) then get into drills and practice.

  • Be prepared to stay inside (shorts and t-shirts) or go outside if the weather permits (may want warmer clothes). Bring everything you might need every day.

  • March 11 - Parent/Family Q&A - stop by the DHS Commons (lunchroom) at 5:30p at the end of practice if you'd like to meet the coaches and/or ask any questions you might have. We try to be thorough in our communication but certainly miss things!

  • Big Teams (Click here to log in) - This is the new registration system for athletics that started this past winter. Please take a look and be sure you register for T&F. Here is a Step-by-step guide to registering with Big Teams

  • All-weather gear - pack a T&F bag prepared for practice/competition in any weather, from freezing to hot! The past week is an excellent indication of what may be coming - a little bit of everything!

  • Match 20th - Team pictures are scheduled for Wednesday, March 20th - links to place an order will follow in a future email.

  • Invitationals tend to be limited entry events so we are not able to take all athletes to these. Our regular-season SEC meets are for everyone to attend. Check out the schedule on our ANet page: Athletic.net (Schedule & Results)

  • March 21st - Our first meet is just 10 days into the season. This is a limited entry invitational that we with spots filled by those that attended offseason workouts or participated in a winter sport first. Our focus is on athletes health and we want to be sure we have enough training complete to be safe in competing. A roster will be sent as the event gets closer.

  • Team Website - check here for previous emails and information

  • Good luck to our athletes participating at Nationals this coming weekend!!

The winter season is quickly winding down with just two weeks left before dead week (no coach led practices). Captains may put something together so keep an eye out for that! Congrats to all our student-athletes that qualified for the indoor State Meet! We have successes in nearly every discipline...it's an exciting place to be as we get ready for spring! Here is a link to state meet qualifiers! Good luck to our powerlifters this coming weekend! Here are your updates for the week, including a major and exciting update!:

High Jumps Coach - We're excited to share that we officially have a High Jumps Coach, SUSIE SUTTER!

Coach Sutter has been coaching at Mill Creek and is ready to make the move to join the High School program! We're excited to have her on board as she brings experience as a parent, coach, and competitor.

Coach Sutter attended Bangor High School and qualified for the State Finals in several events during her career, including High Jump, Hurdles, the 4x100m, and the 4x400m. She was All-State in each of her four years of high school high jump placing 5th as a Junior, 2nd in her Freshman and Senior years, and winning the State Title as a Sophomore. Susie went on to compete in High Jump at the D1 level flying over the bar for Eastern Michigan University. What a tremendous addition to the team!!

Dexter Track & Field - Off Season Week 8
1/7/24

Welcome back from Winter Break!! Here are your updates for the week:

Full-Team Offseason Training Kickoff! We are excited to open up training for all disciplines starting tomorrow! We'll start with a team meeting at 3:30p in the Commons! We'll make introductions, talk about training for mind and body, and answer any questions you might have.

Indoor Meets are happening every weekend and are optional opportunities to compete. We are targeting a few meets for us to attend as a bigger group allowing for valuable pre-season experience and an opportunity to earn the right to compete at the indoor state meet. The first indoor meet we are targeting is less than two weeks from now, on January 20th with Field Events starting at 9am and Running Events at noon. More information can be found at mitstrack.org. The process is a bit different from last year and it appears we will be registering athletes in athletic.net using our Up and Running Track Club name. More to come as we get closer to the meet.

Singlets are available to order now at: https://dexterschools.ce.eleyo.com/course/860/athletics-spring-2024/dhs-boys-girls-track-field-uniform#9018u-sp24. You only need to order a singlet if this is your first year participating in Track & Field or need a new singlet.

Fundraising opportunities for track and field include a chance to work concessions for winter sports! Please consider helping out our Dexter winter sports so their parents can watch their student-athletes and perhaps we'll have the favor returned for us in the spring. Not only can we help out our fellow Dreadnaught families but your efforts will bring funds into the T&F program. Thanks for your consideration! (https://www.signupgenius.com/tabs/6327FD901A2CBEBC53-202324#/)

ABCD Bash - The Athletic Booster Club of Dexter is putting on a Booster Bash on February 10th in an effort to raise funds for our athletic programs. Additional information on the bash as well as the ability to purchase tickets can be found at https://www.abcdexter.org/booster-bash.

Iron Dread - Take advantage of Iron Dread and Strength Training in these winter months! This is the best way to get prepared for offseason conditioning, prevent injuries, and get strong for the upcoming season!

VDOT - Mid-distance and distance runners will be utilizing the VDOT calculator to assist with training this season. We will be incorporating a spreadsheet for you to add your information to but, in the meantime, take a look at this calculator and download the app to your phone. We'll talk more about this in a breakout after the full team meeting on Monday, including paces to focus on for the workouts below.
